Courtyard Garden, Bude

This courtyard garden just outside Bude was redesigned, built and planted up last year.  The planting has established beautifully, with Ceanothus, Jasmin, Quince and climbing roses starting to clothe the walls.  Box balls, Choisya and Rosmary give an evergreen framework with hardy geraniums, alchemilla mollis, golden marjoram, lupins and oxeye daisies adding colour.

What had been a scruffy little courtyard without focus or interest is now a beautiful, low maintenance and family friendly garden.

And now....

The arch with clematis and lavender planted in front  create a real entrance to the garden, where before it was just a gap between the house and garage.

New Planting

The planting for the 'Tortoise Garden' is completed and establishing well.

The gravel mulch helps keep down the weeds and allows the plants to be spaced more widely, ie fewer plants and less maintenance.

Raised bed planting means less bending when weeding, and easy access to the plants.

The festuca grasses in the tortoise area are perfect for providing some shade, and food!  The grassy mound provides a slope on which the tortoise can get a good position in the sun for heat, and it is also a home for dandelion plants - his favourite!

Walled Garden Fowey

The Walled Garden at Fowey is now finished, fully planted and lawn laid.  The design brief for this garden was to create a an old English cottage garden feel, with lots of climbers and apple espaliers to take advantage of the high walls and new pergola, scented plants, fruit and roses, with an apple tree set in the lawn.   The garden is a sun-trap and lots of sun loving perennials, herbs and grasses have been planted.

It will be great to see the planting develop over the summer, more photos to follow.....

Garden Fit For a Tortoise

The garden designed with a tortoise very much in mind just needs the plants to be planted up now to finish it off.

Before the garden had no focus, and was just lawn with one scruffy path running down the side of the house.  The existing raised sleeper bed dominated the space and the run was too damp for the tortoise.

Curving lines in the new design, break up the rectangular space, and give the garden a whole new dimension.  The use of gravel as mulch over the main planting areas unifies the tortoise run with the rest of the garden and provides a well drained and warm surface for the him to walk over.

Perennials and grasses will be planted to attract insects, and provide some tortoise food.

A happy tortoise

Treyarnon Bay

The steps up to a garden at Treyarnon Bay badly needed a revamp to make them safe and user friendly.  The old crazy paving slate path was replaced by contemporary paving to incorporate the patio with the path to the front door and so maximising usuable outdoor space. Coastal planting was added to give the whole garden a softer look and lots of trailing plants have been used to clothe the wall.

Boscastle Cottage Garden

A lot of hard work has gone into rejuvinating the front and rear gardens around a Boscastle cottage which had been very neglected, so it was great to get such good feedback from the client....
'Thank you for all your hard work and creative thinking about the garden, and for being so prompt and efficient in getting it done...a great pleasure to see its transformation.'

Coastal Garden North Cornwall

A design to create private seating areas within an open coastal garden.  The planting will have a naturalistic coastal feel with repeat plantings of grasses and perennials, and evergreen coastal shrubs providing strategic screening as well as focal points.

This design is to create a garden to reflect the Georgian grandeur of a North Cornish farmhouse.  Some words from the client, "I am looking forward to our 'proper' garden, many thanks".

Unusual Design Brief

The brief for this recently completed design included quite an unusual request - to create a 'tortoise friendly' space that looks completely incorportated within the garden.  This will be achieved by using a unified planting scheme across the whole garden, and including 'tortoise edible' plants.

Trelill Garden Completed

A reminder of how the Trelill garden looked before the work...

And how it has been transformed.

The clients wanted  spaces to sit and relax in and to have a proper useable garden where once there was just a mass of overgrown shrubs.

They also wanted to improve and enlarge the existing drive which was small and overgrown, and this had to link into the rest of the garden space.
The driveway beforehand....
and afterwards....

The planting is designed to suit mainly shade, but sun later in the afternoon.

Progress on the Trelill garden build.

The concrete base next...

Then the walling...
And the granite setts...
Looking forward to getting the plants in...
